Show COHERS OHM IS COMPLEX PROBLEM, Forest Service Puzzling About Choice at Experiment Station Sta-tion at Ephriam ! One of the problems that is under j consideration at the Great Basin experiment ex-periment station near Ephraim, Utah, is whether aspen or conifers ever-1 green trees, are to be favored in ..ie j management of many forests in Utah. where the aspen is found covering i great stretches of country. It is tnej pu-pose of the forest service to have , these areas producing the highest rev-' enue and the best class of timber that' is. possible. Although aspen springs up quickly and grows rapidly for a lime it never grows very large or be- , comes generally valuable; the conifers on the other hand start with almost discouraging slowness but once of a J good size they continue to grow rapid- ly for yearS after aiv aspen is' dead and i gonc.- Tho question is not simply making a choice between a rapid growing, shortlived, small tree and a slower , growing tree capable of attaining a 1 large size in a long time. There are : other points than these to consider. ; The conifers are not sure to reseed out 1 over lands very promptly, aspen sprouts vigorously ' within one year, j There is better grazing under aspen than the spruces and firs which choke , out the grasses with their dense shade. Aspen decays very much more rea(. iv than any conifer on the other hand, rendering much material useless, and its growth is retarded more bj frosts, insect attacks, etc. 11 is also mucn less effective in hindering the melting of snow in the spring, which is of importance im-portance In regai d to irrigation. The problem is extremely complex, but it imusL be thrashed out if the aspen for-;est for-;est type is to be handled on an effi-j effi-j elency basis. nn |
