Show oo L, H. SIB 15 NUDE CORPORAL One of the Weber county men, who left with the last quota for the training train-ing camp at American Lake, Wash., has received recognition. Lawrence Howard Swanner, son of Heber Swan-ner Swan-ner of Kancsville. was promoted to corporal almost as soon as he arrived at the camp. He and his brother were both drawn, but Lester being married, submitted sub-mitted a claim for exemption. A few days before the third contingent was called, word was sent to both that they would have to go. However, Howard was the last drawn and would not be called until the fourth contingent con-tingent was ordered lo leave. They wore allowed to choose which was to go first. Having filed no claim, Howard volunteered to go in the place of his brother and left with the third contingent on October 4. A few days later, Lester received a no-, tlcc from the district board that his claim had been allowed', so that Howard should not have had to go until some time later. A letter has been received by friends in Ogden, as follows: "Camp Lewis, Oct. 9, 1917. "Dear Old Pal: Just a line to let you know that Kaiser Bill has not got me yet and he stands a very poor chance of ever getting me, because I am getting in shape fast And I have been appointed corporal. I sure am doing fine. Yesterday we took a five-mile five-mile hike down to the lake and had a good swim. It was awful cold, but we went In and splashed around like fish. I am not in the bunch I came up .here with. We were marching along one day soon after we reached here and they took me and another fellow out of the ranks and made corporals of us. Wo were notified of the promotions this morning. "Well, I Just hatl my supper, which consisted of bread, meat, potatoes and rice. Not so bad, Is it? I sure wish you were here with me. (Signed) "Howard. "Lawrence Howard Swanner, Co. 128, 166th Depot Brigade, Camp Lewis,. American Lake, Wash." |
