Show BLUE AND GRAY CELEBRATING Veterans of the Sixties Commemorate Com-memorate Half Century of Peace and Good Fellowship. Fellow-ship. VICKSBURG, Miss., Oct. 16. Veterans Veter-ans of the sixties, some who wore the blue and some who wore the gray, gathered here today for a four days' reunion on the Held where they met in battle more than half a century ago. Congress made an appropriation of $150,000 to cover the expense of the reunion re-union which Is held under the direction direc-tion of the secretary of war "in commemoration com-memoration of a half century of peace and good fellowship." Legislatures of ten states, mostly Jn tho north, took official cognizance bf the celobration and appropriated sums aggregating $200,000 to provide transportation to Vicksburg for the veterans. These states are California, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Ne-braska, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Arkansas. Ar-kansas. Near the trenches where union and confederate armies contested go bitterly bitter-ly in 18G3 the camp of the survivors of the famous battle has been pitched. It is located in the National (Military park, which is a restoration of the siege lines. The park is about three miles from Vicksburg. It covers more than 1300 acres and contains 32 miles of Bplendld driveways. Tho veterans will be housed during their stay in great tents, the largest of which covers more than 46,000 square feet. Chefs from New Orleans have been brought here to assist in the work of feeding the aged soldiers. Colonel W. D. New-bill, New-bill, of tho United States army, has charge of the arrangements. During the reunion, which onds Friday, Fri-day, tho United States navy and Missouri Mis-souri memorials In tho park will bo dedicated. Troops representing all the branches of military service have been brought here for the ceremonies. |
