Show ROBBERS ESCAPE BUT ABE BEIi PUBSUED BV POSSE SA"LT LAKE, Oct. 16 A mixed train on the Deep Crook road, running from Wendover to Golf Hill, was held up and robbed at 3 o'clock yesterday morning eighteen miles south of Wendover. Wend-over. Charles Barberg of this city was shot in the leg by one of tho robbers rob-bers and was brought to SU Mark's hospital oarly yesterday afternoon. Rumors Ru-mors placo tho loss through the holdup at from $500 to $2000, but definite figures were not obtainable at Wond-overlast Wond-overlast night. So far as known, only three men participated in the robbery. Tho train left Wendover for Gold Hill about 2:15 o'clock and tho first Intimation that tho enginoer had of trouble was when ho saw a dim red light on tho track about 100 yards ahead of him on a slight curve. lie stopped tho train and sent a brake-man brake-man ahead to investigate. When the brakeman reached tho light ho found It to bo a lnntcra, covered with a red cloth, on a hand car, which had been placed on the track. As ho was about to removo the obstruction, ob-struction, a gruff voice called out from tho darkness: "Let thai lantern alone and beat it back to your train as fast as you can." Passengers Are Robbed. The brakeman obeyed with alacrity. In the meantime two masked men had boarded the train and- with drawn revolvers re-volvers ordered, "hands up." The hands went up, and while one robber relieved tho passengers of what valuables they had tho other one ordered a brake-man, brake-man, who had tho keys to the express safe in the adjoining car, to open the strong box Tho brakoman complied and the robber is said to have removed soveral packages from the Bafe. Mail sacks also were opened, but F. M. Johnson, postmaster, at Wendover. roported last' night that no registered mall was taken, so far as a careful check disclosed. As soon as tho looting loot-ing of tho cars had 15cen accomplished the robbers ordered the engineer to run his train back to Wendover. A few minutes preceding tho robbery the telephone wires had been cut and news of the robbery did not reach Wendover until the train reached there shortly after -1 o'clock. As soon as possible after the train arrived at Wendover, Sheriff Adamson of Tooele was notified of the holdup and ho Immediately organized a posse of his own men, aided by Nevada deputy depu-ty sheriffs and Wendover citizens and went In search of the bandits. Last night it was reported that the sheriff was at Ferbor. he having received reports re-ports to the effect that the bandits fled in that direction. Tho point where tho robbery took place is in the center of a vast area of arid flat lands, and in view of the fact that travel on horseback would be difficult, dif-ficult, through scarcity of water, it Is believed that tho bandits used an auto, mobile. |
