Show COSTS GARFIELD Ml $100 TO ESCAPE JNL SENTENCE 1 The prize sentence handed out by Judge George S. Barker in the muni-, cipal court this morning, was drawn by John Butler of Garfield, who was fined ?100 for having liquor unlawfully i in his possession. He was recently arrested ar-rested at the Union Station by Deputy Sheriff William Brown. The deputy sheriff told the court thai when he took Butler into custody be found him carrying a heavy grip through the subway at the local station. sta-tion. Just as he stopped Butler, he said, two other men, appearing to labor under heavy loads at the task of transporting their suitcases from the tnin to the waiting room, attracted his attention and he told Butler to wait where he was until he investigated the other two. According to the officer's story Butler would not stand without hitching and proceded to go away so hurriedly that it took the officer two blocks of fast speeding to catch him. The officer fold tho court he found in Butler's grip 6 quarts and one half pint of gin, and 3 quarts and a half pint of whiskey Butler enlightened the court as to the use he intended making of Ihe liquor He said he worked in I Garfield where the water was not very'' good and he wanted the gin to avoid j taking patent medicines, but no one thought to question him as to the use I he intended to ruako of the whiskey. That might have been for impure air, though no testimony was given on the point. Butler claimed he walked gently gent-ly from the spot where he was ordered order-ed to stand by the officer. The court gave him a lecture and a ' fine of $100, with the privilege of re- maining in the county jail for 60 days. Bat Butler parted with the money and went on his way rejoicing. The liquor will be destroyed |
