Show WOMAN - DEMANDED HER POTATOES W T PicketL a groceryman, was ordered by the municipal court to refund re-fund to Mrs. Ann Eliza Stone the sum of $1 25 or to deliver to her an order of potatoes amounting to that sum. Mrs. Stone had the grocer arrested and charged him wilh obtaining money by false pretenses. It developed at the trial in the police court this morning, that the grocer had applied the sum of $1.25 to a bill be alleged Mrs Stone owed him when she paid that amount on a purchase of potatoes recently. The grocer was carrying an old bill on his books which he alleged had been contracted by Mrs. Stone's son who died about seven years ago. He also alleged that Mrs Stone had agreed to pay the bill bul had not done so. Mrs. Stone denied having ever agreed to pay the bill, as her son was of age and a married man, though she had supported her son, she said, while he was ill. According to the testimonv in the case, Mrs. Stone went into the Btore a day or two ago and ordered some potatoes, po-tatoes, giving a check for 2 and getting get-ting back the 75 cents in change. But the potatoes were not delivered and, when inquiry was made about them, she said she was informed by Mr. Pickett that he had applied the money on the old bill. The arrest followed. The court settled the case by ordering Mr Pickett to pay back the money or deliver the potatoes, holding that a fair bargain and sale had taken place regardless of anv other bills. Mrs. Stone demanded the delivery of the potatoes and stated 'hat she would plant them and produce many more potatoes from the seed. oo |
