Show SHELLING OF THE I AMERICAN LINE I WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE. April 9 A large German patrol attempted a surprise attack on the American outposts in the sector ! 'northwest of Toul early yesterday morning but was dispersed without I H being able to reach any of the American Ameri-can positions. A corporal in a listening post, seeing the Germans approaching, waited until they were but a few yards away and then challenged. The enemy answered with riflr fire; whereupon the American Ameri-can ou'pe. I nt-il with heavy machine ma-chine gun and automatic fire, scatter- V ing the Germans and driving them back to their own lines. A violent artillery duel wrnt on all through the night along the whole ' length of the American front.
