Show I THE REDDEST HELL OF THIS WAR. Have you been reading the articles contributed on this war by The Vigilantes? Vigi-lantes? i You ask. Who are The Vigilantes? j They are some tbirty odd newspaper, newspa-per, magazine and book writers of the United States, who, early in the war. seeing the necessity of enlightening the homes of America, proceeded to band themselves together and freely contribute, without pay, appeals to the patriotism of this countr.v In the last letter received from The Vigilantes, Hapsburg Liebe declares the object of the German war party is 1 to gain control of the world, and he adds: ! "So far. this plan has failed, how I ever narrowly, for the simple reason that it did not include a reckoning wtih the human nature that God made. The soldiermen of other nations are ijj in the long-run stronger than the east-i east-i m-the-mould iron soldiers of Germany. It is the thorough organization of the German armies that has been the chief difficulty of the entente allies. Perhaps Per-haps the greatest strength of the plan itself, however, lay In the very stu- pendousness of iL Few would believe II ' that any one nation would dare attempt at-tempt to enslave the rest of the world. Half the- rest of the world does not realize it yet. It is too big for their imaginations. Their imaginations are, naturally, peace-time. ' This is the main trouble with us here in America. So many of us will not see what we are facing or what we are fighting for. If we did see, the success suc-cess of the liberty loans and the Red Cross drives, the food-saving and th fuel-saving campaigns, would be much greater. It's of no use now to harp that our administration leaders should have seen the signs of the times sev eral years ago; it kills no German to blame our representatives at Washing, ton for having been in the past, not statesmen, but politicians serving th ir own instead of their country's interest in-terest during those fat, sleepy ye;u-s before Germany pried open the c:ii of hell and loosed Its legions upon Mrth. The one thing to do now is to make stepping-stones of mistakes and work for Liberty' "There Is a great truth which we must not let get by us. You are apt to push out your chest, 1 know, and sny Impossible'' Let me remind you of, the fact that the last three years have I hi rn crowded with achievements of the Impossible! Here Is that pregnant preg-nant truth: If we let Germany win over there. Germany will carry the conquest over here. It Is a part of her colossal plan. Else why this elaborate elab-orate spy system In America? Man. It Is a more complete organization than our own government! If they come, of course, we are willing to die for our country, which Is noblo and brave, but what of our womenfolk"? There lies the reddest hell of this war, brother. Remember the unspeakable violation of Belgium." |
