Show I AT LAST THE AMERICANS I When the Americans entered the district around Ferc-cn-Tardenois, near where Quentin Hoosevelt's grave was found, they picked up a letter written by a German lieutenant to his father n which there is a description o the fighting around Chateau Thierry. Thier-ry. The lieutenant refers to the at-i at-i tack of tho Americans as follows: "At 2 o'clock in tho afternoon artillery artil-lery fire started which lasted about an hour and a half. Wo were expecting expect-ing then that something was going to happen in front of us. Suddenly the fire ceased and immediately run-nors run-nors came to warn us that the Americans Ameri-cans were attacking on the entire llncS Never have I seen such a thing. No-flody No-flody could havo withstood them. The enemy was six or eight times as strong as we were- We were distributed distrib-uted over tho advance in checker formation for-mation by groups of eight men to every ev-ery 200 or 300 meters, and tho Americans Ameri-cans were arriving by regiments. "In this case the decision imposed by hand-to-hand fighting played a most important role. Many of the onemy fell but others took their I places. It was like killing, a few bees j jfrom a swarm. I "What could we do ourselves, very . i inforior in numbers, especially when I the enemy fire was so terrible. It seemed best to run when we could not hold, take another position, resume re-sume the fighting, and gradually rc-! rc-! tire. "Those who could not run have fall-I fall-I en Into the hands of I ho enemy. Many jof them had that fate. There nlso I were large numbers of killed and wounded. Those who arc not too severely se-verely wounded are the lucky. The country receives them in her arms and I they arc out of an unlucky situation." j In closing his letter the lieutenant j wrote: . j "Summing it all up, I think wc have I underestimated Foch and his reserves, and especially the Americans. I have a presentiment I shall lose mv skin also. I wish it were tomorrow." The lieutenant did lose his skin, and, if he was one of the original army of "frlghtfulncss," he- also lost his soul. Having ignored the presence, of the Americans on the west front, and then having referred to them as cannon fodder, fod-der, the Germans suddenly discover the troops from "over the sea" are a mighty factor- Before this war is over the Americans Ameri-cans will 'loom large even on the horizon hori-zon of Berlin. |
