Show SMALL WRECK ON SOOTRERN PACIFIC Assistant Supt. F. C. Smith of the Salt Lake division of the Southern Pacific railroad returned last night from an inspection trip. Aside from a derailment of no serious consequence, j near Golconda several days ago. and some delay to trains on account of j cold weather, he said, things had been moving smoothly on the division of late. Tho derailment, according to the report of the board of inquiry, was Of an express car on second No. January 13. The train, approaching Ooleonda from tho east, was running at a rate of speed between 4.1 and 50 miles an hour. Passing the station, speed was reduced about one-half and then increased to its former rate. Two miles west of Golconda, the rear ! truck of the express car, fourth in the 'rain, left tho traek, passing over the outside left rail. In this position It' was hauled nearly 400 yards anil then broke loose from tho first car in th rear, this being caused by the breaking break-ing of the drawbar. This set the air-brakes In emergency on the train, which ran about 100 yards further before coming to a stop. It was found by the board of inquiry in-quiry that the derailment was caused by a flaw in the tire of the forward left wheel on the rear truck or the I car, which caused it to break into seven pieces. No one was held re- j sponsible for the accident Speaking of the cold weather, the assistant superintendent said that tho temperature ranged from 16 to 35 de-! grees below zero at points between 1 Lucin and Sparks. Nev. This at times,! causes a train to freeze up within a : space of from five to ten minutes,! while engines are being changed, and causes a delay while the many pipes are being thawed out The Nevada residents seem to be weathering winter in good condition, Mr. Smith said, and there is now no1 suffering for want of coal |
