Show Dean Briggs Would Cut Extravagances Cambridge, Mass.. Jan. 18. The theory the-ory that college sports are boys' games and not tremendous disciplinary experiences expe-riences wherein victory Is vital, was discussed by Dean Leharon R. Briggs. chairman of the committee on the regulation reg-ulation of athletic sports of Harvard university, in his annual report made public tonight. Be referred to a recent re-cent Yale university report on tho theory the-ory which he said commends Itself to nearly everybody. "This theory, if adopted," he stated, "does aWay with the present coaching yatem and with much of the present extravagance. The fact that it does away also with much of the present income cannot be overlooked nor should it be forgotten, as It sometimes is, that the cost of athletics Is borne by athletics and not by the university treasury. Incidentally, the receipts from athletics do away with the eIl of subscription for teams. "To unpaid coaches also are open the same opportunities to graft and of disguised professionalism that are open to players. Something, too, may be said for our highly orjiinlzed and intense athletic sport as a great disciplinary dis-ciplinary and educational force which may transform a boy into a man. Yet, these considerations, though they complicate com-plicate the problem, provide no adequate ade-quate reason for Ignoring It, and the. report deserves the active and grateful consideration of every committee on athletics and of every college man." |
