Show ALLIES STILL F0RGING AHEAD Substantial Progress Made in Teeth of Determined German Ger-man Resistance. BRINGING UP BIG GUNS Powerful French Pressure Brought to Bear on the Hindenburg Line. PARIS, March 24, iJ:05 a. m The allies continue to forge anead on the center and extreme right and made substantial gains yesterday in the direction di-rection of St Quentin and La Fare in the teeth of German determined re-Bistance re-Bistance Notwithstanding the efforts of the Germans to destroy the roads as i hey retired, the allies have managed man-aged to bring up a good force of all but their heaviest artillery and the guns are again bus after a long rest. The pressure of the French from St. Quentin to the Aisne is so powerful power-ful that it begins to seem doubtful, in ihe opinion of the French military critics, crit-ics, as to whether the Germans will be able to hold on to the so-called Hindenburg line The invaders have opened the sluices at La Fere, apparently appar-ently feeling that their chances of holding the town are not good now that the French have got a footing on the high ground in the Jussy region, northeast of Tergnier. If General Ni-velle Ni-velle is able to establish himself in this position his guns will command La Fere. French Making Solid Progress. Further south the French are making mak-ing solid progress against the five mile salient covering St. Gobain and formed form-ed by the lower Coucy forest The columns are working hand in hand with columns operating northeast of Soissons, in the direction of Laon. ine latter made continuous progress today and their advance exposes the left extremity ex-tremity of the German line at St. Gobain Go-bain to the risk of being out-flanked and driven back to Laon. It is evident ; that the German staff ip alive to the growing danger and that they are mak-I mak-I ing desperate efforts to check the : French advance. |
