Show ISHourjCarnegie Library " ' ' ' " R Tho gift of a thousand dollars to H ihe Carnegie library has made it pos-siblo pos-siblo ror llio story hour to bo made much more attractive to the uianv chil-drrn chil-drrn of the city. This Rift was se-cured se-cured by the president, John Edward H Carver, from two men who remem- bored their own childhood and as soon as they heard of the need of children's books were very willing to assist In overcoming that need by generous I gifts of $500 each. It will be remembered that two years ago the Rev. Carvor secured from A. R. 1 ley wood and James Pin-gree Pin-gree two gifts of SHOO for the same pur- ' pose, and a year ago Mayor Ileywood again gave $400 for the same use. I Now the Mayor again gives $500 and I this time Mr. John M. Browning is ! the other man who makes bucd a ' scene as the above a reality for the ' bovs and girls of Ogden. The story ! hoiir and the children's literary are I part of the most popular work in the library. Ogden people may well be proud of their library. It is sorely in need of books and money, but nevertheless It is doing a work that is more than credible. The reports of the various towns of the same size show that with imuch larger collections of books they I do not circulate more books. Ogden la almost at the top In comparison of I the per cent of books in circulation. Last week one day's circulation was G74 books It is no unusual thing for nearly all the children's books to be In circulation at the same time. The ; hard 'art of the work is that the books nr.-- in circulation so much of the time ! that they are very quickly worn out and that means replacements so often 1 that new sets and volumes are se-(ured se-(ured slowly. This is especially true with the children's department Mayor Heywood and John M. Brown-i ! ing have done more for the growing generation of Ogden than they will ever realize in giving them the thou-sand thou-sand new books. Much good will be j done In enlisting the boys and girls to read good books One excellent fact is that the boys are in the majority ma-jority in the book drawers' cards. Ogden Og-den boys are readers and It seems probable that they will so soon and so constantly use the new books that President Carver will have to seek I some more of Ogden's good men for I a new lot of children's books. |
