PMHT OGDEN Ml CALLED By DEATH John A Boyle, prominently identified identi-fied with the civic and commercial development de-velopment of Ogden for more than a half century, died at the family residence, resi-dence, 540 Twenty-eighth street, at 12:50 a. m. today. He was 70 years Of ape and death was due to Bright's disease. He is survived by his wife! Mnrt the following children: Mrs. Jo-I Jo-I eph Scowcroft, Sr., Mrs. Virgil P. Cain. Miss Lida Boyle. Leonard. Lorln, lair and Clyde Boyle, all of Ogden. brother, Wallace A. Boyle, seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild grand-child also survive. The funeral will! he held Monday at 2 p. m. In the Second Sec-ond ward chapel, and interment will 1 be in the City cemetery. Friends may view the body at the residence tomor-i row and Monday until i p. m. Former Mayor John A. Boyle was iff horn in Glasgow, Scotland. October 7, 1R46, and was brought to America by parents, Peter A. and Elizabeth i Boyle, when he was 2 years of age The Boyles, being Mormon converts, remained in the settlements of the Saints who had been driven from Nau-voo Nau-voo the previous year, until 1K55 and i then crossed the plains to I tah with ox teams. They located in Ogden and this city had been the home of John A. Boyle ever since, though he made trips abroad in 1881 and 1S87. In early youth he engaged in the manufacture of furniture with his fath-' er in 1 k7l they began to import furniture fur-niture and the decedent remained in that business until lSftn For a number num-ber of years, until 1904, he was also connected with the Ogden Slate bank. The hardware business, through which he became best known in a comraer-l cial way to the present generation, was Mr. Boyle's next venture and he established the Boyle Hardware com-1 pany in July, 1898. He continued in I that business actively until a few years ago, when falling health forced his retirement re-tirement from active business life, in 1 t jthe growing mart downtown. ii In a civic way, Mr. Boyle was once II mayor of Ogden. m 1898: three times a city councilman, 1883-85-87; three) I times county treasurer, 1891-9?. 95. His record of service in those offices was! liiehly commendable and efficient and served to indelibly stamp him as one j of Ogden and Weber county's stalwart citizens. |
