Show wu SHORTAGE OF BILLION CANS W SHINGTON, March 24. A shortage short-age of approximately one billion tin cans confronts the canning Industries of the country, according to estimates made today by canning interests and department of commerce officials. Principal railroads have notified the department of commerce officials that embargoes placed on plate, steel and block tin had been lifted and mat everything ev-erything possible is being done to expedite ex-pedite their shipment. A committee of six government officials and repre- sentatives of plate and canning inter- ' ests has undertaken to make an inventory inven-tory of the caners' requirements. Should the necessary number oi tin cans be forthcoming from manufac ! turers it is said the price of canned goods probably will remain at the pres ent level, which is an increase over last year's prices of about 25 per cent In one industry alone the canning of gray fish, the shortage is said to approximate ap-proximate 500,000 cans. esr . |
