Show BOLD MOVE OF CUBANJEBEES l Enter Santiago and Destroy Buildings and Retire Without With-out Resistance. SANTIAGO. March 21. (Staff corre-I corre-I I" spondenee of the Associated Press.) I Two hundred rebels wearing the uni-f uni-f form of the regular army entered the city early today, destroyed the build- ings of a small park on the Miramon road and retired without encountering i serious resistance by the government forces. A detachment of about twenty advanced along the road further into the city until near the cemetery, when about a hundred shots were exchanged with the troops garrisoning the city. I Apparently there weer no casualties. It was the boldest move yet made by the rebels about Santiago, but for many days they have been hovering about the outskirts, making it unsafe for one to go into the country. The destruction de-struction of cane has continued, though on a diminishing scale. At no place have the rebels made a deter-j deter-j mined stand, having adopted tactics of guerilla warfare, j Notwithstanding the apparent ease with which the raid on the edge of the city was made today, the government forces appear to be gaining an advantage advan-tage that promises a comparatively early end to the rebellion. The most serious phase of the situation, as i : wed by Americans now, is the dan-I dan-I W ger of destruction of valuable property. proper-ty. Threats made by the rebels to destroy de-stroy the property of the Bethlehem Steel corporation at Laiqulri and Fire- meza, a few miles to the east, where : the company is operating iron mines, caused Commander Belknap to land there a force of American marines and the marine guard which had been removed re-moved from El Cobre. just west of Santiago, where big copper mines are worked, was replaced this week. |
