Show 'TH0!M1!S OF : GUARDS CALLED WASHINGTON, March 2R - The number of national guardsmen called into thp federal service for policing industrial and other stratetrie points was brought up to 50,000 under orders issued today. At the same time the regular First regiment of engineers, scattered along the Mexican racks at the Mexican border, was ordered bark to its barraeks at the capital, the navy took additional measures to hasten construction and pquipmont of fighting ships, and both thkwar and nav departments de-partments announced further provisions provi-sions to facilitate recruiting. Because of a misunderstanding as to the number of troops affected by the order issued yesterday, stopping demobilization of the guardsmen returning re-turning from border duty, the war de partment also directed that all organizations organ-izations which have been mustered out of the federal service, but have not left the state camps for home, be brought back under arras. The First. Mississippi infantry and ambulanec company No. 1, Alabama, are affected by this provision, A supplemental order or-der is expected to recall the First Kentucky infantry, a part of which was mustered out ome weeks ago. The regiment itself has been retained! in the federal service and to complete its organization the missing units may be brought back It is not improbable that similar supplemental orders may be necessary to other organizations partially demobilized de-mobilized The -war department orders or-ders are based on latpi official reports re-ports regarding the progress of de mobilization, but in BOme cases off i cials here have not been advised up to date. At the navy department bids were opened during the day for a large quantity of ordnance supplies, and Secretary Daniels announced that additional ad-ditional bids would be opened Satur day for submarine chafers. He expects ex-pects to order a large number of these small craft as soon as shipbuild I ing concerns hae given the department depart-ment Information as to their building' capacities. The New " ork Shipbuilding com pany, the secretary also said, has been requested to speed up construction of the superdreadnought Idaho, which was to be ready for launching by October, Oc-tober, but a postponement has been necessar Builders of the battleships' Maryland Colorado. West Virginia and Washington also have been requested to expedite construction work and to induce more rapid work, a special bonus bo-nus has been suggested by the de partment. Both the war and navy depart ment are enrolling physicians from civil life in order to expedite recruiting. Neither department intends to permit any delay in examining applicants or other preliminary proceedings which might be caused by inadequate ma-fhinery ma-fhinery during the rush of recruits now developing. Tonight Mr. Daniels left for Annapolis Annap-olis to preside at the graduation exercises ex-ercises there tomorrow of the first class of 183 midshipmen ordered into active service three months ahead of its regular June graduation The second sec-ond class, which will be called into service in September, prohably will be kept at the academy this summer for intensive training instead of taking tak-ing the annual cruise. |
