The suicide of Joseph Tuma, head of the Tuma Savings Sav-ings bank, a private institution, and the Indictment of four private bankers bank-ers were the latest developments today to-day in Chicago's "epidemic" of private pri-vate bank failures, and a general Inquiry In-quiry Into these Institutions. Tuma's bank, the state's attorney said, was to have been investigated. The banker's counsel, however, said the suicide was due to 111 health and overwork, and that the bank Is solvent. solv-ent. The state's attorney sent officers offi-cers to Tuma's bank Immediately after aft-er the suicide with instructions to investigate. in-vestigate. Tuma stood on a pier, fired a snot into his head and fell into Lake Michigan. Mich-igan. The state's attorney announced that the grand jury today has voted true bills against JMichael and Stephen MIchnlulc on charges of receiving deposits de-posits while their private bank was insolvent, in-solvent, and against Moses GInsburg and his son Emanuel, who conducted another private bank, on the same charge. Runs continued today on some private pri-vate banks known to bo solvent and which had no difficulty In meeting the demands. When Mrs. Tuma, the banker's wife, was Informed of his suicide tonight, to-night, she said he had loaned $60,000 to a contractor and that payment was overdue. To recoup his cash on hand, she said, he had sought to -borrow $10,000 from a downtown bank today but was unsuccessful. frt |
