Show O'LEARV OUT IN A STATEMENT Says He Was Requested to Give the Interview Hughes Denies. New York, Oct. 23. Tho Demo-cratic Demo-cratic national committee tonight issued what it termed "second installment" install-ment" of charges that a secret agreement agree-ment exists between Charles E. Hughes, Republican presidential candidate can-didate and the American Independence Independ-ence Conference, of which Jeremiah A. O'Leary is one of the heads. Tonight's statement, the Democratic Demo-cratic national committee announced, "is based upon the official records of the O'Leary organization" and attempts at-tempts to show by excerpts from Mr. Hughes' speeches what is alleged to be a compliance with the "demands" said to have beon made upon the Republican Re-publican nominee by O'Leary and his associates. , The statement issued tonight by the Democratic national committee was read over the telegraphone to Mr. Hughes at Montclair, N. J. Mr. Hughes declared he had nothing to say tonight concerning it. Jeremiah A. O'Leary in a statement tonight, said in part, In reference to the statement of Sunday: "Governor Hughes has stated correctly cor-rectly what happened at our interview inter-view with him. In order to prevent any possibility of misunderstanding or misrepresentation we had carefully reduced to writing what we wished to say to Mr. Hughes. Our statement speaks for Itself. The man who attempts at-tempts to find doubt with any portion por-tion of it, particularly with the question ques-tion wo asked: 'Whether or not Mr. Hughes would administer the presidency presi-dency of tho United States In accordance accord-ance with the spirit of the fathers and the whole American people,' is not a true American." Mr. O'Leary said there was nothing noth-ing secret about the conference, and asked: "Why should there be?" He said the interview was given by request. |
