Show NOSEET I! BE SUPPORTED BY UTAH M - The Salt Lake Tribune of this morning has a story purporting to come from Washington which is "Interesting, "In-teresting, if true." It has to do with a meeting alleged to have been held in the capital, attended by Senator Reed Smoot, C. W. Nibley, C. E. Loose and NephI L. Morris, at which plans were made for eliminating Governor Wm. Spry from state politics and boosting Roosevelt nationally. The Tiibune's dream follows: Here are the reported terms cf the amalgamation: "United Staes Senator Reed Smoot agreed to do all in his jower to deliver de-liver the vote of the Utah delegation to Colonel Theodore Roosevelt for the Republican nomination for president. "NephI L. Morris agreed to do all In his power to amalgamate the Progressives Pro-gressives and Republicans of Utah and to work. for the renomlnation and re-election of United States Senator George Sutherland. "The Republican leaders agreed to support Nephi L Mori is for the Republican Re-publican nomination for governor of Utah "All agreed that tho remainder of the ticket was to be evenly divided, the Republicans to take half of the state offices and the Progressives the other half. "The virtue of this alleged alliance commended itself to Senator Smoot and his lieutenants, it is said, as an .effective means of extinguishing the political light of Governor Spry, whom Smoot is fearful of having as an opponent op-ponent for United States senator On the other hand, Morris Is credited with an ambition to be governor, and, therefore, grateful for support wherever wher-ever he can get It. "It will be recalled that two years ago a somewhat similar conference was called by Senator Smoot at Washington, Wash-ington, at which the available candidates candi-dates for congress were decided upon. At that conference it was decided that E. O. Leatherwood should bo nominated for congress by the Republicans Re-publicans from this district. Tho Republican Re-publican convention confirmed the selection, but Mr. Leatherwood was defeated at tho polls. "Color to the report of the results of this latest conference is lent by tho fact that there have been for some time indications that persons close to Smoot, desplto their vigorous denunciation of Roosevelt four yeais ago, were getting ready to turn to Roosevelt. Indeed, Senator Smoot was recently quoted by a KansaB City paper as saying that he was ready 'to crawl on his hands and knees from the Atlantic to the Pacific' to help H Roosevelt. This interview was re- printed by Mr. Smoot's Salt Lake H newspaper. Later the senator repuli- H ated the alleged interview. "It is currently reported that Sen- ator bmoot, prior to tne reported con- jpH ference at Washington this week, H promised Colonel Roosevelt personally H that he would deliver the Utah dele- jH gation. H "This attempt, however, to present jH Utah to Roosevelt may result in a serious division in the ranks of the ,H Utah Republicans. Many Republicans ffH ni Utah are strongly opposed to the tlH nomination of Roosevelt, and, for that' 'JfiH matter, are not Inclined to follow v-ylH blindly the leadership of Senator WLH Smoot with respect to any candidate. WriH "Those who know Governor Spry hH are of the belief that tho governor fil will not permit Senator Smoot to IvH carry out his reported plans with ref- JH erenco to a hand-picked state ticket Mkl without first making a fight to pre- XH vent it KIIB "Bishop Nibley, whom the reports IjlH had as one of the conferees at the Jf-jH meeting where the Morris deal Is sup- I iH posed to have been made, returned fflH from the east late yesterday. He was &4H in Washington, but said that he did Kl not talk politics there with Senator fta Smoot or others. The bishop declared I H that while away his time was en- M H grossed with personal matters and M''M public matters he put before Senator jBiH Smoot at the request of the Salt Lake Commercial club. "H H "Mr. Morris Is still away. He is not B ! H expected home for several days. H,1 Colonel Loose also Is in the east." fl-' |
