Show STALLING IS FOR SYSTEM Old Time Slambang Baseball Gone Game Is Becoming More Scientific. Boston, Feb. 19. Georgo Stallings, manager of the Boston Braves, says organization and system are more important to a ball club than the garnering togotner ot star players. "A team will not win pennants without with-out system and without playing for the old percentage," said the Miracle Man. "By percentage I mean the knack of playing everything to the edge, tho ideas of taking advantage of every little opportunity. "A team composed of ball players who are not regarded great stars but have system would bo my choice against an aggregation of wonders who pass up team play. "Baseball is becoming more scientific. scient-ific. The days of heedless, slambang baseball are gone. Little things are important. By proper use the little things 'become mighty big." System percentage made is possible for Stallings to pull the Braves from last place to the permant and world's championship in 1914. He did not have a team of stars. He picked up players cast aside by other teams. It seems that all he needed was some one in uniform to carry out his orders. An example of Stallings' play for "the old percentage" was in the way he handled his outfield. He had two sets of outfielders, lefthanded hitters for use against righthand pitchers and righthand batters for use against lofthand pitchers. He always had the edge in batting, no matter that pitcher was sent against his team. oo |
