Show ENGLISH WRESTLER EK TO MEET 1PTS1 Sam Clapham, the English wrestler who opposed Jack Harbertson last fall In two of the best matches ever staged In Ogden, arrived In tho city this morning from Los Angeles. Though defeated In both bouts by the Ogden wrestler, Clapham made a fine impression with the local fans and, In speaking of his experiences here this morning, ho said he has never been In a city that he liked better. Since leaving Ogden, Clapham has been a principal In thirty-one bouts, winning 29 and being defeated only by Frank Gotch and Adolph Ernst He has numerous preBS clippings, the tenor of which Is that he made a big hit with the Pacific coast fanB. One of the clippings tells of a bout in which the Englishman defeated Take-mura, Take-mura, a Japanese, making the brown man quit in 7 minutes with a body scissors and strangle hold. "Sam was asked why the strangle hold was permitted per-mitted and explained that tho articles arti-cles of agreement specified that the two wrestlers would battle without a referee and the first man to quit would be declared defeated. The consequence con-sequence was that the Japanese went to the hospital and Clapham took the long end of the purse. According to a press clipping of this bout, Its finish fin-ish created a small riot, as the Japanese Jap-anese fans had banked heavily on their fellow-countryman to win. Clapham Is booked to tour the western circuit, with the Sells-FIoto circus thlB summer, aa a wrestling partner for Frank Gotch. He expects ex-pects to remain in this locality a few days and will endeavor to secure a match -with Jack Harbertson at catch weights. oo |
