Show CE1ETEIY PLANS OF COMMISSIONERS' . OFOCDEN Recently, tho city commissioners passed an ordinance respecting the care of lots In the city cemetery which has brought many communications communica-tions to the city board. Speaking of the provision today, Commissioner Miles L. Jones, superintendent of parks and public property, made the following explanation: "For a number of years past it has been customary for private individuals individ-uals to solicit, and undertake to care, for lots in the city cemetery, charging charg-ing therefor ?5 per season, the owners to furnish the hose, necessary water connections, etc, and in addition to this they paid $2 for water rental, making a total of $7 per lot. According Accord-ing to the ordinance now in effect, tho city furnishes water connections, hose, tools, etc., and does tho sprinkling, sprinkl-ing, cutting and trimming of the lots at a cost all told of $5 per lot for the season, making a saving of $2 to the owners. One of tho reasons for the passing of this ordlnanco is that those heretofore using water In the cemetery havo had no regulation in regard re-gard to the matter and many have turned the water on and left it without with-out proper care and, consequently the ground has been filled with water, to the detriment of their own lots, and others adjoining. Under the present regulation, the city will employ competent com-petent men to look after this work and can assure the public that It will be done properly. "Tho ordinance also provides for a perpetual care fund as follows: Any person or family desiring the perpetual per-petual care of a lot can secure it by depositing with tho city treasurer $100, which will be put into a special fund, and the city will pay five por cent interest on this money, which will pay the $5 per annum for the care of the lot without any further bother to the family or the individual. We would especially recommend this plan to those settling estates. Some havo already done so and others have expressed ex-pressed their intention of making provisions pro-visions for the same in their wills. "It is also provided in tho ordinance that those desiring cement vaults can have them built by the city at a very nominal cost, ranging in price from $5 to $13, according to the size of the grave. It has been customary to have private parties build these vaults who charge from $20 to $25. We would recommend that they be built when possible, as it will do away with the unpleasant sight of sunken graves, which almost invariably follows In a few years after interment of a body. "Any further Information in regard to this matter will be cheerfully furnished fur-nished by tho city sexton, treasurer, and other officers of Ogden City. If the people interest themselves sufficiently suffi-ciently In this matter this season, It Is our intention to put in a complete water system in the city cemetery, so that water can be furnished for every lot therein, which will be done at tho expense of the city and will thus do away with the necessity of Individuals paying extra for water connections. "We earnestly desire that the public will co-operate with us in making tho cemeteries what they should be, the most beautiful places in the city, where those who have laid away loved ones can take prido in visiting and assist as-sist in beautifying these sacred spots of ground." on |
