Show 00 MIDSHIPMEN TO W DISMISSED There May Be a Great Cleaning Clean-ing Out at the Naval Academy. Annapolis, Md., Feb. 1. It was understood un-derstood on reliable authority hero today to-day that 220 midshipmen, or about one-fourth of the entire membership at the naval academy, will be asked to resign soon because of their failure to pass the half yearly examaination. Many midshipmen claim that the examinations ex-aminations were much harder than usual, but this is denied by the instructors. in-structors. The number of failures In each class is said to be as follows: First or graduating class, 20; second, sec-ond, 60, third, GO, fourth, SO The fact that the academic board considers each case gives hope to some of the young men that they will be afforded a further opportunity of remaining in tho naval service. One explanation of the large number num-ber of failures Is that instructors have been forbidden to Indicate in any way to the midshipmen the character of the examination. The court of inquiry in-quiry which investigated the scholastic scholas-tic methods of the academy recommended recom-mended abolishment of the "dope" system, as It was called, and an order or-der forbidding the use of any kind of special help followed Many midshipmen mid-shipmen claim that the average youth needs these to pass the examination Others claim that the midshipmen felt that, on account of the special need of officers, they would be treated more leniently than usual |
