Show NOTED ENGINEER DIES SUDDENLY William Bonner Carnan, said to held tho record for years of service with ono railroad company, died yesterday afternoon at thok home of his daughter, Mrs. Boyd Chandler, in Wilson Lane. He had been visiting at the Chandler homo since December, 1915. His death waa entlroly unexpected a3 he ap peared to be in the best of health yesterday. Mr. Carnan was horn in Vincennes, Ind., in 1839. HIb father, Jtobert M. Caman, was a "United States senator from Indiana tor eight years and served serv-ed many consecutive terms on the district court bench at Vincennes. The son inherited the strong character of the father and, even In his early childhood, child-hood, was noted for rugged honesty In his associations with his companions. This trait remained with him throughout through-out his entire life. He was noted throughout the country coun-try for his record as a railroader and was said to be tho only man In the United States, who had passed IiIb entire railroad career without a mishap mis-hap to a train jn his charge. He was an engineer on tho Baltimore and Ohio railway for 55 consecutive years and at the time of his death was on tho pension list of that company. While still actively employed as an engineer, he fell heir to a large fortune, but this did not deter him from continuing in the service of the B. and O. When death came to him, through an attack of valvular disease of the heart, his daughter, Mrs. Chandler, was in the city shopping and his son-in-law, who Is employed at night, was in the house asleep. A grandchild, of which the aged engineer waa exceptionally excep-tionally fond, and. with whom he had been playing during the afternoon, discovered the body in one of the rooms. He called his father and the two carried the Inert form to a hed and summoned some neighbors for assistance. Mr. Carnan, however, was past all aid. He is survived hy one sister, Mrs. Louise Bostwick of Pasadena, Cal.; a daughter, Mrs. Chandler of Wilson Lane; and two sons, Ned Carnan of Echo, and Bonner Carnan of California, Califor-nia, The deceased was a member of the O. R. a, of R. T. and the Order of Redmen. The body was removed to the Lindquiat mortuary and will he shipped to Vincennes for burial. Funeral services will bo held Friday Fri-day at 2 p. m. in the Lindqulst chapel Bishop E. A. Bingham presiding. Remains Re-mains will be accompanied east to Vincennes, Indiana, for interment, by Mr and Mrs. Chandler. |
