Show ARE HELD BACK Cannot Reach the Forces Surrounded Sur-rounded at Kut-el-Amara, in Mesopotamia. London, Jan. 28, 3:22 p. m. Heavy fighting occurred on Friday between tho British army that Is attempting to reach Kut-el-Amara, in Mesopotamia and the Turks. The battio took place at Essin, 50 miles from Kutel-Amora. The British were unable to drive the Turks from their positions. Tho purpose pur-pose of the British is to rescue the original expeditionary force which has been surrounded at Kut-el-Amara. The official statement on tho Mesopotamia Meso-potamia campaign was given out today to-day under yesterday's date. "Sir Percy Lake (the new commander comman-der in Mesopotamia) reports that General Tylmer attacked the position at Essin on Friday. The force fighting fight-ing continued through the day with varying success. The weather throughout was atrocious, a pouring rain rendering movements of troops extremely difficult "Owing to the floods it was impossible impos-sible to renew the attack on Saturday Satur-day and General Alymor took up a position po-sition 1,300 yards from the enemy's trenches. "Tho weather continues bad, with incessant rain. "The casualties have not been received re-ceived but they are reported to have been very heavy on both sides." London, Jan. 23, 3-4S a. m. A semi-official communication issued at Budapest, Hungary, as forwarded from Zurich, contains the first admission ad-mission received here from Teutonic sources to the effect that fighting has been resumed In Montenegro. According Ac-cording to this report, a considerable portion of the Montenegrin army refused re-fused to surrender and fierce fighting fight-ing was resumed in the mountains yesterday. |
