Show j SCHOOL DISCIPLINE H!i DEMANDED. Mj In another column of this issue, the Y Standard calls on the school hoard K to investigate the truth or falsity of Hf the statement made by the Standard n1 lust Saturday, namely, that the re- HE,! quest of Superintendent Mills for an Hi'j additional teacher was absurd as the Hw' members of the program committee H'1 of the high school had decided that the Hfl school did not lequlre another teacher Y ! for the coming semester. This statement Y' was, in last Sunday's Examiner, on W the authority of the principal of the BK high school, declared to be false. In H, other states, if a newspaper makes a Y statement reflecting on any school Hj teacher or school official, the school H toard promptly makes an lnvestiga- B tion and forces the newspaper to re H tract and apologize, if it has wronged Hj any one under the school board's au- Hi thority. Here in Qgden, the school Hj board does not get an opportunity to M do its duty. The superintendent H rushes into print, but he contradicts ' himself so often that the newspaper Hi t&xn, his Interviews to threads. ( Then ho gets a questionable reporter, with a still more questionable fledgling, fledgl-ing, to jump to his rescue and when ho fails there, then Mills gets "Dad" Berson to pull his chontnuts out of tho fire. Poor old "Dad," the way he toadies makes his friends frown and grit their teeth and they say, "Dad's alright, but that Svengall Mills has made a Trilby out of him." Nowhere in tho country have the school teachers, principals and students stu-dents ever been pormltted to UBurp the powers of tho school board as here In Ogden. Talk about discipline in the Ogden schools! There is none. Superintendent Mills purposes to have his own way in spite of everything, oven if the school system is demoralized. demoral-ized. Wo think it is timo for the Bohool board to Investigate tho truthfulness truth-fulness of the statement made by the Standard last Saturday, and, if false, to demand a complete retraction and apology. The Standard promises to do both on demand made by tho school board after Investigation. Second, the board should Ibbuo orders or-ders for all subordinates in the schools to make their complaints to the school board with a promise by the board to promptly and fully protect pro-tect all employes of tho school system sys-tem when falsely attacked by any newspaper. The Standard makes the demand for an investigation in good faith and will abide by the result. nn |
