The blanket blan-ket of smoke overhanging western Washington and British Columbia is so thick that the sun and moon shine like red balls of aire, casting no shadows. Mariners feel their way cautiously and fog horns are blown constantly. Tourists complain of the obscuring of the scenery and tic smoko Irritates the eyes of all the Inhabitants. Yet the state flro warden war-den and the director of the state forest for-est fire association say that the total to-tal loss by forest fires in the season now ending will be less than in any year during the history of the state, Tho government forests havo es caped altogether British Columbia has had a worse fire season than usual and there has been some loss of life.
