Show ATTEMPT MftDTTO CUOHH, Salt Lake, Aug. 24 What the police po-lice believe may be a kidnaping case, instigated by a ring of white slave operatives, was brought to light early yesterday morning when an attempt was made to chloroform Miss Marguerite Margue-rite L-ocko in her home, 866 McClelland McClel-land avenue. Miss Locke is 17 years of ago. Miss Locke herself frustrated the plot. She awakened when tho cloth saturated with chloroform was placed over her nostrils and, leaping from the bed, turned on tho electric light. She obtained a good description of tho intruder, a man of small stature, dressed In a brown suit She says he is apparently an Italian with black, bristly hair. Miss Locke retired to her room about midnight Sunday. She read for an hour and then went to bed. At 3:30 In the morning she was awakened awak-ened when a damp cloth was placed over her lips and nostrils. She lay still for a moment and then leaped from tho bed. Her feet struck the head of a man whom sho heard scuffling scuf-fling about the room. In a moment she had turned on the light and saw tho man crouching before her, covering his face with his hands and arms. Screaming, sho ran from the room into that occupied by her sister, Mrs. E. D. Pidge, wife of a prominent produce pro-duce merchant, who has been living at the Locke homo Blnco the death of Mrs. Locke last Juno. The Intruder followed her Into the hallway, but, apparently frightened, left the house, leaping over a fence to tho north of the home and fleeing. He escaped. Neighbors .heard him leap over tho fenco. A telephone call was sent to police headquarters. City detectives were sent to Investigate. Investigation at the Locke home disclosed that tho kidnaper had gained entrance through j the rear door by cutting through the screen. He had apparently gone dl-rectly dl-rectly to tho room occupied by Miss Locke. On the pillow of her bed was found the cork of the bottle containing chloroform. chlo-roform. Near tho bed on a chair was found a soft (felt hat, apparently belonging to the would-be kidnapor. Aside from these clews and the description de-scription of the intruder furnished the police by Miss Locke, there 1b noth- Bay" '' i r ing to disclose his identity. Membors of tho Locko family are at a Jobs to account for the intrusion and the attempt to Kidnap Miss Locke. It is believed to bo the second sec-ond attompt mado. Friday morning early tho odor of chlorororm was detected de-tected in tho house, but whero It originated orig-inated could not bo determined It Is believed that the man entered tho houso on that night, but was frightened fright-ened away. Miss Locko Is the daughter of C A. Locko, president of the National Railway Mail ClerkB' association. At tho time of tho intrusion the houso was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. PIdga and Miss Locko. -rti |
