Show MM MEN BY TIE SCORE AT LOCAL CHURCH Through the generous hcartednoss of Rev. and Mrs. H. D. Zimmerman of the First Baptist church, approximately approxi-mately lLT, unemployed men were made to feel comfortable this morning, morn-ing, when they were given a wholesome whole-some breakfast in a rear room at the church The announcement, of the intention of the Baptist pastor and his wife to serve breakXast to sLxty men thie momlnc was Kivon out yesterday and tho plan was for Desk Sergeant Hag bert Anderson of the iolice department depart-ment to issue sixty tickets to men lodRins in the jail, whom he deemed worthy of assistance. Mr. Anderson followed out Instructions, but the news spread and from 8:30 to 10:30 o'clock tho church dining room was filled with men who came in hungry and went away filled. Those who had tickets, used them, but others came and asked if they could have something to eat without a tickot and not one was turned away. The menu served consisted of a savory and nourlshinR beef and vegetable vege-table soup, crackers, bread, doughnuts and coffee and each man received from one to three bowls of soup, with all of the other accessories he could eat. In connection with the serving of the breakfast, the true condition with regard to the scarcity of work at the present time throughout the United States was brought home to a number of local buslnee. men who. through curiosity, looked In upon the scene, as well as to thop who were serving the meal. Few of the men who gathered gath-ered around the tables had the appearance appear-ance of the regular tramp, but. according accord-ing to Rev. Rev. and Mrs Zimmerman were assisted as-sisted in serving the breakfast by Helen Browning, Mrs Adda Day, Mrs G. U Zimmerman. Mrs. T. D. Johnson John-son and F. R. Hamilton and. while they were at their work a number of gospel hymns were sung by Mrs. Andrew An-drew Fletcher and Miss Ruth Johnson. |
