Show NEW SYSTEM 1 THE JUNIOR HIGHS OP THE CITY The city board of education, at its meeting last night, approved a plan outlined by Superintendent J. M. Mills, whereby the freshman class will be eliminated from the high school and a ninth grade class will be substituted sub-stituted for it in the junior high schools. The plan, which is known as the slx-tliree-three, will be juaugu rated on Monday morning and through it, it is thought that a number num-ber of students whose entrance to the high school was somewhat doubtful, will remain in school for at least one more year One effect of the change will be a closer correlation of studies and the making of the new high school student stu-dent better able to cope with the up-er up-er classmen, if he enters high school as a sophomore. Instead of as a fr ih man This, it is thought, will encourage en-courage the younger students to remain re-main in the schools until the high school course is completed. In speaking of the plan and the reasons rea-sons for inaugurating it, Superintendent Superintend-ent Mills said: The fact that only about 50 per cent of the students graduating from the eighth grade go to the high school has become well-established However, How-ever, when those about to graduate were asked what they would do If fsva the ninth grade was kept in the sub- j&g&j high schools, the superintendent says Ws there was an immediate response. 1P& showing that from 90 to 100 per cent ll&la would remain in the three buildings, Sgaj the Central, Lewis and Dee junior W highs. !lr&3 "The plan meets with the approval lfa of the principals, the teachers and the students affected this year, and hj is part of the general arrangement fc'Mslj that was made when the junior high f' schools were started, details being ! worked out from time to time. Under this system, which has been found IrVj practicable in many cities, the ninth mffl grade remains in the junior high lif school and has close supervision and little election as to studies. Also, the t.. high school essentials are included 1 I in the course, giving a real start In j I high school life. "The result on the high school Is that the elective system works to belter advantage, the older students have the possibility of better using their own initiative The number of ctudents held from the eighth to the ninth grade is increased and it Is a j known fact that if the students can I be induced to enter the ninth grade they will continue further in their high school work. jj "The change will not make any material difference in the teaching I staff 'only that we will not need to add extra teachers this semester at the high school and that the teachers in the junior schools will work a half hour longer each day. the longest jj school day being seven hours."
