Show MAY TAX EARNINGS OF LIGHT COMPANY Salt Lake, Nov 2u Continuing their deliberations on the franchises for the Utah Light A Traction company, com-pany, the city commissioners agreed In Informal session yesterday to impose im-pose a tax of one-half of 1 per cent on the gross earnings r,f the company from now until the expiration of tho first twenty-live cars of the franchise, fran-chise, nnd i per cent for the last twenty-five years The old franchise of the Utah Light & Railway company contains no such provision, but the Merchants' franchise, fran-chise, now owned by the consolidated company, contains Juat such a clause, and it was agreed to include it m both franchises and to make the tax payable immediately. It is understood that the company is willing to accopt this tax on its earnings if the city will exempt it from any occupation tax or license tax and require no free lights. The commission decided that it cannot relieve re-lieve the company, or any company, of a license of occupation tax Also it was decided that the company will be required to furnish free lights for all city buildings now in use or to be erected or used as city buildings in the future. This will apply to the Y. M. C A. building, recently acquired ac-quired by the city, the public libraries and other public buildings The earnings from the company's lighting business as the city is desirous de-sirous of cheap rates for power current cur-rent and does not intend to filace any obstacles in the way of reductions on this class of current. Both franchises will require the j company to furnish the city free sixty-horsepower sixty-horsepower of current for power pur- j poses, any power in excess of that amount used by the city to be paid for at the rate of 1 cent per kilowatt hour oo |
