Show 0. S. L BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR Sail Lake. Dec. 19. For the pur pose of extending branch lines and building feeders in Idaho and laying new double track during 1914, the Oregon Short Line will ask the executive ex-ecutive committee of the Union Pacific Pa-cific system for approximately $3,-4S0.000, $3,-4S0.000, according to the budget which has been forwarded to New York from the offices of W. H. Ban croft, general manager of the line Owing to the tightness of the money market and the unsettled business coiditions of the country, the budget was closely scanned b local offi- cJnls of tho road before it was presented pre-sented to R. S. Lovett, chairman of the executive committee At first It was Intended to ask for almost $5,000,000 to carry on building build-ing of cutoffs and lowering of some of the heavier grades between Po-eatello. Po-eatello. and Huntsvllle, Ore., but later la-ter it was decided to ask for onl those improvements which must be made to meet development of the country through which the railroad passes. The $1,500,000 pruned from tho budget was Intended for extensions into now fields where small farming communities have grown up, but It was decided that the productiveness and tonnage of those regions did not justify building of lines at this time. A lnrge amount of the work dono in Idaho In the paBt three years is not vet on a paying basis, and it was the opinion of the officials that the present pres-ent lines should be yielding a fair return re-turn upon Invested capital before lines are built Into newer parts of the state. The budget Includes only money for grading, ties, rails, ballast and tho erection and equipment of telegraph lines for the railroad There is no requisition for equipment, motive power or stations included In the $3. 5uO,O00, as these are furnished from othfr funds, This budget will be used exclusively for building track age. It was announced that there would not be any requisition made upon the executive committee during 1914 for equipment of any character as the road is thoroughh able to handle all freight and passenger business offered. of-fered.
