Show FOREST SERVICE TO AID IN WING AUTO ROAD Along Hie route that it now ap- i pears will be taken by the Lincoln Memorial highway from Ogden wes( the road from Ogden to Ely Ib kept in fair condition by the interest of i automobile travelers and others between be-tween Ogden and Salt Lake, and be j tweon Salt Lake and the large mlu-ing mlu-ing Interests at Ely. On the western end, traffic between San Francisco i f.nd points ns far east as Reno keep the road In repair and open except for short periods following heavy i snows In the high Sierras The pres I nt poor.-st road la therefore between Ely and Reno via Eureka and Aus-tln, Aus-tln, in which there Is considerable i sund and the steep and relatively unimproved un-improved road through Blackbird j canyon and over the "Austin Sum mlt" in croseing the Tolyabe range. Indeed, the Blackbird canyon has been perhaps the aiost dreaded of any pari of th strteh westward from Ogden and Governor Oddle, In approving ap-proving the projects for road con stiuctlon in the Nevada national for-evtc for-evtc recommended construction first of all of the Blackbird canyon road. On account of the occasional downpour? down-pour? of rain In Nevada, roads prevl- : o.isly constructed, which followed Jn r eneral the beds of the streams or the banks close to them, were sub ; 'eel to frequent washouts, and with out careful planning by an engineer it was impossible to avoid so man) j fharp turns that an automobile could not attain a start to get up a hill, but i must maintain continuous low gear j Furthermore, the freighters, who usu-aly usu-aly have a trailer and sometimes j three wagons, carry' a "shoe " or pair of shoes, with which they block the v heels of the rear wagon when do j scending the steeper grades. This, especial!? when the ground is damp and soft, forms ruts In the best roads j and when water starts to coursing j down, gullies are formed which ruin the road for automobiles. It Is therefore, there-fore, very desirable to lower the per cent of grades to a point where the! to Iphters can hold their wagons by i leans of brakes. The new road will i not exceed a grade of 10 per cent at any place with an average of 8 per ' nt If the road throueh the Blackbird canyon, which is within the Tolyabe I forest, could bo constructed on the I south side of the canyon the engineering engi-neering would be very much slmpll fled, according to Supervisor Collins, but It Is desired to build a road that will be open, unobstructed by snow, tlie year round, and to Insure this the road must tako the north side of the canyon. Early In the fall District Forester Sherman allotted $8600 for the con- I struction of this road, but Mr. Collins Col-lins awaited the arrnal of an engineer engi-neer from the district office to hist in laying out the road on the best possible lines. Unless prevented I by storms, J C Brown, who is now on the Toiyahe forest, will run this HUrvey In connection with a representative repre-sentative of the state engineer from Carson City, and It Is hoped that con struction work may be begun In the early spring. It Is planned to raise ttt the grade sufficiently when orossing depressions and gulches that it will net be overflowed and gullied mmm k |
