Show ROOSEVELT CHEERED IN SOUTHERN little rock arkansas gives the president one of the most enthusiastic welcomes he has so far received little rock arkansas oct 23 after an all night journey from birmingham president roosevelt and parly arrived in argenta a northern suburb of this city promptly on time this morning despite threatening weather a largo crowd welcomed the president the city had been decorated with flags and bunting and it was filled with visitors from all parts ot tho state it wag early apparent that the presidents welcome would be a warm one when the presidents thain arrived at argenta over the rock island lines a reception committee headed by united states senators berry and dark governor dails and federal judge trimble entered the President 8 car and warmly welcomed him to arkansas the president did not alight from his car at argenta and the train proceeded to big rock the nearest point to fort logan H root here the president and party alighted and a visit was made to the post the party arriving there at after a brief reception the president viewed the barracks and ground and expressed his satisfaction at the excellent arrangements for the comfort of the troops nearly the entire morning was taken lip at which the starl for the city was made when the carriages were drawn up the mounted escort of honor took their places beside the president this escort which is known as the blue and gray consisted ot 24 civil war veterans 12 union soldiers and 12 former confederates and it particularly pleased the president it was announced that this escort would precede the presidents carriage throughout the entire day and act as a body guard the president headed by his escort of honor and accompanied by the reception committee reached the city shortly before noon tho streets were jammed with people and every available housetop on the main streets had its occupants the president was loudly cheered as he passed along toward the city park he repeatedly rose in his carriage and bowed his thanks to tue people at one point on tenth street the vay was cleared with difficulty so great was the crush the party traversed tenth street to the city park where an immense throng had gathered about the speakers stand the president was welcomed to the city and state by governor dails and judge thelber in appropriate addressees address fes when tha president stepped forward to respond he vitis again greeted warmly george W rogers president of the board of trade the master of ceremonies first introduced governor jefferson davis who spoke at some length upon general lines he MAS followed by ed the president the applause given the president was extremely enthusiastic and it was several minutes bo fore he was allowed to proceed referring to the race problem to which governor darts had alluded the president said the worst enemy or the negro race is the and above all tha criminal of the type so often hideously engaged the reputable colored man owes the duty to himself and to his race to hunt that criminal now as to the white mans side no to avenge one hideous crime by another is to reduce the avenger lo 10 tho bestial level another thing which makes this lynch law so abhorrent Is that three fourth of the crime for it is invoked are tor other than that against the woman of the country Cov emor you and I 1 ana all others in authority owe it to our people to drive out the reproach and the menace of linch law in the united states |
