Show railroading IN AND OUT OF oliden from wednesdays standard the generah topic of discussion among the local railroad men is th harriman special there are several interesting pointer in connection with the run of this train from sparks nev to ogden a distance of miles which Is under the supervision of local officials this train was received ac sparks one hour and forty five behind its schedule time which was given at 1045 p m but the train did not leave sparks until 12 midnight sunday it arrived in ogden a m monday tha entire tun of miles was made in 11 hours and 23 minutes owing to the tact that orders were given by the director of maintenance and operation to not exceed 45 miles per hour the train was belil down to this speed over the greater portion ol 01 the salt lake division the fastest time made with the special was between montello and where sixty miles per hour was mad and at several points the train attained the high speed of seventy dye mile per hour the fact that such remarkably fast time wag made between sparks and ogden ia all the more noteworthy when it Is taken into consideration that the train came up a grade totaling 2100 feet this being the dl terence in the elevation ot sparks and ogden some very fast time was made from sparks up the humboldt Humbo idt valley in the entire run of miles there were only five stops made these being either to take water or change engine and from the time the train left sparks until its arrival at ogden only 13 aln utes had elapsed that the wheels were not in motion although the time of two minutes which it took to change engines at osden deemed to be a very short apace of time in which to do the work it is learned that at montello nov the time continued was just half as long or one the train stopped one minute and a halt at montello another point ol 01 interest Is the face that the train ran miles between each stop all the railroad men and official are being congratulated upon the excellent showing made with this special out of ogden over the union pacific one of the best runs oa that road was made there is a grade all the way to altamont 90 miles but the two engines 1840 and 1842 engineers lck krauss and frank gunnell the latter being relieved at evanston lay dave hamilton took the train of six heava cars through in two hours there haq only one stop of 7 minutes at wasatch engineer leo krauss said the six cars pulled as heavy as an ordinary train of ten cars but he gives credit to the excellent condition of the engines and roadbed tor the fast time made he says that the 17 P compounds are now in better condition than ever before and capable of making record runs the special train arrived at omaha at a mi one bour behind time engines and switching e tracks of the northwestern road the train left a a m it was stated that no attempt would be made at fast running from omaha to chicago forty hours were consumed in the run from san francisco to omaha general manager of tho union pacific who accompanied th harriman party east from cheyenne made this statement the harriman special made the run from san francisco to omaha in 39 hours and 51 minutes including all stops for water coal and changing ot engines the distance covered being 1787 miles there is nothing special about this run except that we were simply expected to reach omaha in order to ad just ourselves to the conditions east the statement made to the effect that president roosevelt requested that the special tae run at a slower rate 0 speed is absolutely incorrect as no such communication was received from the president and furthermore there was no necessity tor such a communication muni cation as the president rode over the union pacific lines last summer from denver to omaha when the speed was still greater and he expressed himself as being delighted with the trip had there been a for a faster run it could have been made but we accomplished all that was necessary in malting suitable connections each several new tracks are to be built at the southern pacific machine chop to be used for new wheels the wheels tor all engines running on the oregon short line southern pacific
