Show RAILROAD MEN ARE 0 K district attorney halverson Is a republican but lio Is not voicing the sentiments of his party or its leaders when he proclaims his opposition to employs emp loes of the railroads holding office he maintains that all em aloyes of those roads that have been granted franchises by the city government are ineligible to hold office or in other words that railroad men are de barred from aspiring to or holding office unless he has in mind a railroad company that is operating by virtue of franchises granted by tho city he has unnecessarily brought into tho campaign a question foreign to tho present contest if ho knows of a railroad company answering that description it is his duty to bo specific furthermore if there Is a bar against railroad men holding office why has he failed during all his incumbency to make the law effective by taking action against the violators why hag he waited until the campaign period to make known his views and why has ho suddenly become so emphatic as to what be will do with railroad men city attorney bagley does not agree with mr halverson in his interpretation of the law but to the contrary holds that any railroad employed in the city with the exception of those in the service of tho street railway or union depot companies is entitled to hold municipal office this view Is held by an overwhelming majority of the lawyers ot ogden and those in charge of the republican campaign have advised the railroad men who are candidates to disregard the utterances of the district attorney this paper desires to add its opinion to that of the republican campaign managers that employed emp loyes of those railroads operating by virtue of franchises granted by the government are not within the scope of the state inhibition |
