Show ROOSEVELT IN THE SOUTH there is something more than an expression of southern hospitality in the reception which president roosevelt is receiving in his tour in the southern states surely there s nothing of mero organized political activity in the gathering of the crowds which meet him at every stopping point the welcomes el comes almost everywhere carry tho unmistakable signs of sincerity which the I 1 most efforts cannot give to perfunctory formal receptions whether men look tor political results or seek to analyze the motives and purposes of tho executive in these journeys even the practical politicians must be impressed alth their value to the country as an influence tor patriotic sentiment and mutual understanding among the peoples ot all sections the roosevelt speeches are seldom commonplace and always in harmony with high ideals and a broad catholic national spirit he appeals to the best in the south as in the north ills actions at times have been directly in conflict with the most cherished traditions and strongest prejudices ot the people of that section and tactful deference to sectional feeling has not been a specialty in his policy as an individual yet a characteristic outburst ot a vardaman probably would be resented at this time in the south more strongly than in tho north the president has demonstrated the nonsensical character of the that he has hopelessly estranged tho southern people by his somewhat ostentatious disregard of somo of their race prejudices in social formalities ho has shown that in the south as in the north the politicians and the political organs do not always accurately reflect public sentiment ho has appealed there as he has done previously in the north from the leaders to their followers apparently in tha south as in the north the public is convinced that mr elfe Is honest and earnest and loyal to the right as he bees and understands it north or south east or west the average citizen is in favor of that sort of a man in public or in private life the lifelong life long southern democrat will not change his political beliefs in approval of traditional race differences feren ces will not be removed by the presidents visit to each of the southern states but the experience will be to the president beyond a doubt ant certainly will not be harmful to the couth and incidentally it ought to assist in giving to the people of all sections a better realization of tho fact that this Is a common country that the duties and responsibilities of government administration reach to all parts of it and that nowhere in it Is a man to be made a for niona sake |
