Show HILLS NEW RAILROAD nothing can stop it from entering portland portland ora oct 2 president james J hill orthe great northern railroad raili oad arrived in portland yesterday accompanied party consisting of howard elleott El llott darius miller george F baker loulis W hill J M hannaford benjamin campbell charles M alvey joseph mccabe and henry blakely in the course ol 01 an interview mr hill saad the portland seattle railroad 18 being built in compliance with the demand tor traffic and because the development of the region will furnish traffic it will bring into portland the trains of three great systems the northern pacific great northern and burlington of which the northern pacific is the only line now coming into this city over its own rails we will build a road of such character of construction st as has not before been built west of the bocky mountains of low gradients and slight curvature and it will be completed ready tor trains to enter portland by a year from next christmas it Is finishing the work that wo started out to do and that we must carry to completion we do not ehnow what may be the plans of others but we are coming to portland with the new line of railroad we hope that nothing unneighborly will be done but nobody can stop the building of the road obstacles might slightly delay the road but the road will be built as per program asked if branch lines will be built south from the columbia river into central oregon mr hill replied nothing has been done in regard to that branch lines always follow choro main lines are built as a matter of course |
