Dec. 21 A meeting of seven of the ten members of the lower low-er house of the forthcoming legislative legisla-tive assembly from Salt Lake county was hold Thursday evening in the offlco of M. H Krlebcl, one of the representatives-elect. It was a business busi-ness meeting, and, Is very often the fate of secret meetings, It "busted up In a row." The three absentees wore Mrs. Annie An-nie Wells Cannon, Mrs Ewyth Eller-beck Eller-beck Road and Clfirenco Bamberger There were present, therefore, Daniel Dan-iel McRae. M. H Kriebel. Mrs Anna H. King, Claude T Barnes, Dr. Jane W Skofield, R. L. Judd and David J. Cook. The meeting was called by W. II. Folland, chairman of the county coun-ty central committee; Dana T Smith, secretary of that committee, and Frank R Chrislensen. The object of the gathorlng was to solidify Salt Lake county's house delegation on tho speakership, the generally understood Idoa being that Mr Kriebel was to be the beneficiary of the solidifying process Had the plan gone through, the speakership fight would have been Kriebol against John N Henrie of Garfield county, with other candidates doing the best they may. When a resolution was presented to the effect that Salt Lake should have Uie speaker and that trades to that end be proposed, there was a strong disposition on the part of a large share of those present to balk, which, Indeed, they did. The upshot of the meeting was that Mr McRae was appointed ap-pointed a sort of delegation leader to mako swaps in situations where. In his judgment, it would be to the advantage advan-tage of Salt Lake county's representation represen-tation to hnve trades. When the other members of the county central committee yesterday heard about the meeting they waxed exceeding wroth for. said they, If there were going to be any meeting of tho sort they wanted to be in on it. MERCHANT SUES CITY; CHARGES INTERFERENCE Salt Lake, Dec 21. Salt Lako City, Mayor Park, the city commissioners and the chief of police are made defendants de-fendants in a suit filed by F II Show-ell Show-ell In the district court yesterday to restrain the city from! nterferlng with his business as a retail merchant. The suit Is a sequel of the city com mission's orders given to the chief of 1 police last Wednesday instructing him to stop the sale of Christmas decorations dec-orations on the streets and sidewalks. The order was given after a delegation delega-tion of florists had protested against the traffic unless the vendors have inclosed in-closed quarters. Showell challenges the right of the city to shut down his business so long as he doe3 not place his wares beyond the three-foot sidewalk property line He quotes the city ordinance to prove his contention and asks that the c-tlon c-tlon of the commission be declared void and illegal. SICKNESS PUTS BAR ON WIDOW'S DOOR Salt Lake, Dec 21 Before Mrs. May Gorman, a widow, was stricken with smallpox a week ago, she had been supporting herself and her three little girls with the $6.50 per week which she earned In a laundry. The little family lives In part of the house of Mrs. Martha Parker, a widow, at 504 South First West street. When the quarantine flag was placed upon tho house front, and Mrs. Gorman and her 11-yenr-old daughter, Phoebe, were declared de-clared to have smallpox, the outlook for necessaries became a serious problem prob-lem to the brave woman, who is the only support of her children Friends came to her rescue sufficiently to tide tho family over for a few days, but It Is doubtful if their slender supplies will give Mrs Gorham time to recover from the disease and regain her strength before she will have to start earning again. |
