MR F A Carnal, former district attor- H nev of Hill county. Montana, saw two men rushing out of the building where the crime was committed, about the hour when the diamond broker was slain. His description of the two men led to the arrest of Stratton and Hampden In a North SIdo flat about 12 hours later. Both women under arrest are blondes and a blonde worn an has been seen on mauy occasions In Logue'a office. The motive for the crime puzzled the police for a time, but earlyt&day Captain Halpln gavo It as his opinion that robbery was the motive. Jewels and jewelry to tho value of 3,000 were said to bo missing. Tho police said nothing could bo learned In the man's life that would cause him to be murdered mur-dered for revenge. Efforts will bo made again today to photograph finger prints on the safe and vaulL Twolvo hours after J. H. Logue had been murdered in a building within a hundred feet of State and Madison streets, Chlcngo'a busiest street corner, cor-ner, four BUBpects were taken Into custody. One of them is Claude Stratton, said by the police to be an escaped convict con-vict from tho state prison at Columbus, Colum-bus, 0. The names of the others-one others-one man and two women havo not been revealod to the police. They were detained on a telephone "tip" from an Identified man, who said that Stratton had threatened tho diamond merchant after a controversy over tho sale of a watch chain several days ago. Woman In Crime. The finding of a pleco of a woman's wom-an's underskirt, first thought to bo a ribbon bound around Logue's neck as a gag, caused the police to believe that a woman was implicated In the crime. Police Investigated a report that a woman had been a constant visitor vis-itor on business to Logue's office for the last ten years, being admitted by a secret signal, as the diamond dealer constantly feared burglars and always kept the door locked Murderer Tortured Him. That Logue's murderer or murderers tortured him for almost an hour before be-fore finally killing him, was a theory advanced by the police The seventeen knife wounds, the seared eyeballs and cheeks as a result of the application of acld tho odor of chloroform on the gag that stifled his cries, and a bullet wound in the shoulder all gave strength to the theory that one who sought revenge or who was possessed with a lust for inflicting alow death committed the crime F. A. Carnal, former prosecuting attorney at-torney of Hill county, Montana, gave the police information which resulted In the suspects being detained Carnal told the police he had seen Stratton in company with another man in the McVlcker building where the crime was committed during the afternoon. He was not positive that Edward Hampden, who was detained with Stratton, was the latter's companion. Hampden Is from Pelican Lake, Wis. Stratton said he had arrived in Chicago Chi-cago Thursday. Police said he could not give a clear account of hlB movements move-ments today. Hampden declared he came to Chicago yesterday and was not In the McVlcker vicinity. "If Stratton Is not one of tho men I saw, ho is his doublo," Carnal declared de-clared upon confronting the suspect -it the central police station. Wife of "Toronto Jimmle" Arrested.
