Show CONSIDERING THE CAPITOL CONTRACT! Much preliminary work preparatorj ' to letting the contract for the state I capitol was accomplished yesterdav ' 'at an all-day session of the capitol commission. This work included a close comparison of the tabulated bids on alternative propositions The com- I mission also discussed in detail pro- posed substitutions of material and the changing of specifications on which the bids were based in some minor particulars. The commission will hold a public meeting today at its offices in the elt building when bids for the et cavation will be opened. The excavation exca-vation contract will not be let. however, how-ever, until later. Another executive session will be held tomorrow, beginning begin-ning at 11 o'clock hi tho forenoon. All members of the commission attended at-tended yesterday's meeting Governor Spry. Attornev General V. R. Barnes, M. S. Browning, Secretary of State Charles S. Tingey, John Dern, Colonel Col-onel C. E. Loose, Anton H. Lund and R. K A. Kletting, the architect. From the tabulations the James Stewart company appears to be the lowest bidder on every proposition. The commission com-mission does not legally have to let the contract to the lowest bidder, but the sentiment of the members seems to be that the contract should be let to the lowest responsible bidder. The fact that the bids are lower than expected makes possible the substitution sub-stitution of better material in some instances than was designated in the original specifications. These substitutions substi-tutions wore the principal subject of discussion yesterdav It is considered consider-ed certain that, the commission will let the contract before the first of the year and possibly within a few days. No definite decision was reached reach-ed yesterday as to the proposed changes in the specifications, but it is likely that the commissioners will agree on the changes befoie the last of tho week With a llttlo more preliminary pre-liminary work the commission will bo ready to let the contract. |
