Show EVENING OFIr MUSIC BY SCHOOL Thc large auditorium at tho Ogden High school was well filled last evening even-ing b Interested patrons of tho cantata can-tata '"Tho Building of the Ship, which was sung by fifty Ices selected se-lected from the student body, under tho direction of Prof. II. G. Smurth-walte, Smurth-walte, head of tho music department of the school. The cantata opened with an orchestral orches-tral introduction and included the following fol-lowing -socal numbers: Part I. The work of the soloists was especially espe-cially well received Miss Nellie Ramey, contralto, sings with artistic charm, displaying a beautifully cultured voice, fully ade-quato ade-quato for the demands made upon It, with poise and almost perfect enunciation. Her rendition of the re-clUUlvo, re-clUUlvo, "Thus, With the Rising of the Sun," was a finely finished bit ol vocalization. The Misses Rosamond Laird and Marian Ellison, mezzo sopranos, two promising joung singers, carried their parts with credit. Both possess voices of good range and power, and, with proper training, should win a placo of their &wn In the ranks of the city's soloists. The major portion of tho solo work was ably carried by Hcber C Hancock, Han-cock, baritone Mr. Hancock sings with an ease and naturalness thnt is quite refreshing, seeming never lo reach the limit of either range or power pow-er In his singing This feature In particular promises a future for Mr Hancock. In his recitatives he also displayed good histrionic ability Thc choral work was well carried out under the baton of Prof Smurta-waite Smurta-waite and added to the charm of the production The closing ensemble was especially well done, Miss Laird earning the solo work with good effect ef-fect Mr Smurthwaite's effort in arranging arrang-ing nnd directing the affair Is worthy of much praise and should result in making the music department a factor for good in the school 6o |
