The steamship steam-ship Marama brought news from Australia Aus-tralia today of a tidal wave IS feet high which swept over the Fijian town at Funa Point, wiping out the village of SO houses early last month Trader McConnell's store, built of stone on a cement foundation, was completely washed away, not a vestige ves-tige being left. Burt Lindsay, a resident resi-dent of the Island, writing of the disaster, dis-aster, said , "The copra plantation, which was valued at about J100.000, was ruined and the native village has absolutely disappeared from the face of the earth. Tho peoplo wore all killed or ruined and the few survivors have nothing to eat In the bush not a leaf is left of trees and the mountains look as it fire had swept tho island. The place was stripped by the force of the wind," |
