Dewey, a Plnkcrton detective, at the Albert hotel In West Templo street, between First nndSccond South, was reported much improved this morning bv the attendants at St. Mark's hospital, hos-pital, and unless peritonitis or other complications develop, it Is believed he will recover, despite the gravity of tho wounds. Johnston was strong 'and In splendid physical condition and this is greatly in Ins favor in withstanding with-standing the shock produced by the loss of blood and the operations. Dr. H. B. Sprague, who performed the operations, says that Johnston's condition is extremoiy precarious, but that there Is a chanco for recovery, and this report was hailed with joy at pollco hcadqunrters today and by tho many friends of tho wounded officer. of-ficer.
