Show FATAL FULL OF A SLEEPWALKER SALT LAKE, May 29 Fred W, Heaton, a telegraph operator, aged 41 years, plunged to his death at 4 o clock this morning at the Nevada rooming-house, 119 south Main street, n victim of somnambulism Disturbed while sleep-walking he leaped head foremost through a window on the fourth floor and fell down an air shaft, turning completely over and striking on his feet in front of a room occupied by H. B Beer, proprietor of the place. Both legs were broken between the knees and ankles nd he was Injured Internally. He was hurried to St Mark's hospital where he died at 8 0 clock. Heaton engaged a room at the Nevada Nev-ada house at 11 fi 'clock last night Bert Hunt, night clerk of the place, said that Heaton was Bober and there was nothing In tho man's appearance to Indicate an abnormal condition. He showed Heaton to a room on the fourth floor from which the window opens to an air shaft Heaton retired at onco but two- or three hours later noises in the room attracted the attention atten-tion of Hunt and he made an investigation. investi-gation. He hoard Heaton walking back and forth in the room nnd a chair was overturned. Hont said he knocked knock-ed on the door and told the lodger to be quiet as he was disturbing other roomers. The man became quiet and remained ao until 4 o'clock when tho clerk was agaju roused by noises In the room. Hunt knocked on the door and tho next moment heard a crash of glass and the thud of the body as It struck at the foot of the air shaft after striking a railing on the second floor. Finds Man In Heap. Beer rushed out of his room and saw Heaton lying in a heap, in a semiconscious semi-conscious condition. He called for help and Dr H. B. Sprague was summoned sum-moned Dr Spragife found that bones In Heaton's legs were crushed but the man was- able to gasp his name and that he had been employed on one ot the dally papers here and thon mentioned men-tioned something about the Fleur de Lis saloon and the Court saloon. The fractures were reduced at the hospital and at first It was: thought ho would recover, but ho lapsed into uncon-sclousnessness uncon-sclousnessness from Internal Injuries and died at 8 o'clock. According to the proprietor of the house, Heaton made considerable noise during the night and was apparently appar-ently .walking In his sleep When tho clerk went the second time to the room, Heaton, It is believed, became startled and plunged through the window in his alarm, or fell through window in nis alarm, or fell out through dizziness. Beer was awakened awak-ened by the thud ofthe body and at once notified tho police and summoned Dr Sprague. Was Telegrapher. Heaton was for many years a telegraph tele-graph operator and was employed on some of the Salt Lake papors as telegrapher tele-grapher and as a circulation solicitor. Several years ago he was employed, on tho Union Pacific as operator and agent at a Wyoming- station. Heaton lived formerly in Jackson Mich,, where his son, aged 10 years rosiaes wita nn uncle, i-ess man a year ago his mother died, leaving a small estate and Heaton drew money from his attorney, W. W. Wright, of Jackson. Frod Kuser, proprietor of the Fleur do Lis bar knew Heaton and said today to-day that yesterday Heaton complained of being 111, In the ufternoon he went to Liberty park and In the evening borrowed money from Kuster with which to rent a room. The body was removed to the Qualtrough-Alcott undertaking parlours whore funeral arrangements will be mado later. |
