Show SAVE THE OALAVERAS BIG TREE GROVE FROM THE AX. It should be tho hope of every Califoruian that Congrc$sman Rakqr and National Forester Graves succeed m getting through congress the bill they propose for the purchase of the Calaveras big tree grove, says the Sacramento Bee. The government can secure theso priceless forest giants if it acts now. If it delays too long the' may fall before the saw and ax, and be reduced from their present grandeur to the lumber pile. The threat of destruction is hanging over this grove that nature could not replace in 2,000 years. Some of the trees have been cut and converted into lumber, although not enough to make their loss noticeable. The forest is practically intact, but will not remain so unless the government buys it. This is tho second time the proposal to buy the grove by governmental gov-ernmental appropriation has been made. At the first attempt the plan failed to gain tho approval of the senate. This time it should not fail. |
