Tho allegations were made in connection connec-tion with tho discussion on the gambling gamb-ling bill and woro printed In tho Salt Lake Herald-Republican. s Representative William Allison opposed op-posed the bill becauso ho believed the penalty too eevcrci Representative Russell and Representative M.. H Welling led the fight In support of tho bill.. The charges made by Representative Repre-sentative Rusell are shown In tho following fol-lowing extract from the story: "Among other things Representative Representa-tive Russell declared in answer to Mr. Allison that Allison's own town of Ogden Is one of the worst gambling centers In the state and that the city of Ogden collects $S00 a month "hush money" from tho gamblers "Allison wanted to know where Russell received his Information to this "effect and Russell replied emphatically em-phatically that ho had it straight from Chief of Polico Thomas E Browning and Captain of Detectives James E. Pender, both of the Junction Junc-tion city." In speaking of the affair last evening even-ing Chlof Browning said: "Representative Russell, of Salt Lake county, and Jim Donaldson, ol Salt Lake city, came to my office after th.e legislature convened and asked us If he could get somo Information Inform-ation as to how the gamblers were fined. Mr, Pendor and myself told him that the rocordB of the last month showed that a complaint hud been filed ngalnBt eight men In each house of such character and the regularily authorized ball commissioner commis-sioner had fixod their ball at $100 each. We told him the record also showed that the defendants failed to appoar and $S00 from the eight defendants de-fendants of each of the four houses was forfeited, making $3,200 In all "Mr. Russell and also Mr. Donaldson Donald-son Bald that at ono time under Mayor Morris' administration gambling gamb-ling was run on the square In Salt Lake city and the treasury got the revenue. Now, he said, thero were one hundred places that he and Jim Donaldson knew of that woro running without paying a cent flno and were not disturbed by tho polico. "Ho also claimed that Ogdon was the best regulated city he had oyer visited and noted particularly the absence ab-sence of street walkers on tho streets of this city while in Salt Lako. ho said, he could not go twenty yards without being stopped by them." Whon Chief of Detectives JameB Pendor was questioned concerning tho statements of Representative Russell he corroborated the statements of Chief Browning. |
