"Up to January 19, they predicted that In tho caucus which wo had that day, we were dead suro to go all to pieces Some of thorn denounced it an advance aB a 'crazy perforanco,' but when wo emerged from that caucus cau-cus cheerful, smiling and united, not of them had tho grace to admit that we presented a solid front, ,fWhcn subsequently we were about to hold a caucus on tho Canadian reciprocity pact they turned prophet of ovll once more and predicted that wo would fight like cats, but wo came out smiling and united, they shook their empty heads Democrats 3aved tho Day. "Then when all the Democrats except ex-cept five voted for reciprocity and saved the day, the president promptly prompt-ly wrote an open lottor to Congressman Congress-man McCall congratulating him and the Republicans on carrying tho reciprocity reci-procity bill, notwithstanding that the President and McCall combined could not muster even a majority of the Republicans for it. The president's letter to McCall was an absolutely preposterous performance a slap in tho face of tho Democrats.
