Show FILLMORE RESIDENTS SCARED BY BRUSH FIRE Last evening the residents of Fillmore Fill-more were aroused to a state of intense in-tense excitement, when a brush fire got a good start east of town. According Ac-cording to reports, a group of local girls were having a corn roast. They built a fire iff the side hill across from Archie Robinson's home, just as hundreds of other parties have done in the past, never dreaming that it would get beyond their control. But the long, hot, dry spell we have had, p th h-msh and trees iust rie-ht to leap into flames at the touch of the smallest spark. As it happened a crowd of young men from town had gone for a ride up the creek, and heard the girls first call for help. They immediately immediate-ly rushed to the scene and part of them remained to fight the fire, while the driver of the car came with all haste to Fillmore to summon sum-mon more help. Just at dusk the flames from the fire could be seen at a great distance I as they made rapid headway through j the trees. The men of the town were quick to respond to the call for help ! however, and less than a half hour t after the alarm was spread there must have been well over a hundred busy with shovels and plows. The . fli)nes were soon under control and j every precaution was taken to pre- vent their further spreading. The I greatest damage was done to Archie Robinson's land, as some good fire j wood was destroyed, and the garden was tromped down by those fighting j the fire. Progress, Fillmore. |
